Hi! I'm Ollie,

Ollie Solanke inventor of the adjustable layer cake leveller

When I was in secondary school, my mother gave me a Stork Baking Book that she picked up at a jumble sale. The first cake I baked was a chocolate cake. Everyone loved it, but I thought that the amount of sponge outweighed the amount of filling.

I thought about baking thinner sponges, but the texture of the sponges was inconsistent, so I started to cut the sponges with a knife to make them thinner, but the layers were not always even.

Over the years, I looked for something that could cut level sponges. From the reviews of the products I saw, the results varied. I then started to use items in the house to stabilize the height of the blade of my knife, to cut the sponge.

These items produced varying results as the height of the sponges baked varied.

I used a large bolt and locked a jigsaw blade between two nuts to help me mark the outer edge of the cake so that I could use a knife to cut the sponge. This worked as the height could be adjusted depending on where I wanted to cut the sponge.

This, together with the additional filling, improved the look of the final cake.

I later thought of how I could incorporate marking the edge and cut the sponge more easily. On the television, I saw cheese being cut with a cheese wire, so I started to use different materials to cut the sponge. This worked well, so I attached a line to the bolt above the jigsaw blade between the nuts.

With additional help and with further development, the line was attached to the end of the blade and the Adjustable Layer Cake Leveller was manufactured and I started my business Precision Layer Cake Slicer Ltd.
